Tibetan American Community of Connecticut Holds Prayer Session for Earthquake Victims in Tibet
Branford, CT – January 11, 2025 — On Saturday, January 11, the Tibetan American Community of Connecticut, Inc. (TACC) held a heartfelt prayer session for the victims of the deadly 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Tibet on January 7, 2025. The earthquake devastated Dingri County in Tsang, Tibet, resulting in over 120 confirmed deaths and leaving thousands of homes and buildings destroyed.
Over 200 community members gathered to pray for the victims.
In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the 49th day is a significant moment for the soul’s journey to its next life, and prayers offered on this day are believed to help guide the deceased in their transition. As such, the association announces another prayer on 02/22/2025, on its social media.
The prayers focused on both the victims of the earthquake and those impacted by its aftermath, with participants chanting mantras and offering butter lamps as symbols of light and hope.
“This session is not only for those who passed away but for the survivors as well, who are enduring great suffering,” said Ugen, the chanting master. “Through these prayers, we hope to bring comfort and healing.”
The earthquake, which struck early in the morning on January 7, caused widespread destruction, leaving entire villages in ruins and overwhelming local rescue efforts. The prayer session provided a moment for the Tibetan American community to come together in solidarity, offering both spiritual support and a sense of connection to their homeland during this difficult time.
